2Gig Recalls 40K GSM Modules Due to Fire Hazard
By Jason Knott, February 27, 2012
Security manufacturer 2Gig Technologies has issued a voluntary product safety recall GSM radio modules contained in some of its Go!Control panels in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) due to potential fire or burn hazard .

The CPSC says 40,000 units are in the field and to date there are "22 reports of the product overheating including three reports of minor smoke, heat or fire damage to the wall where the panel is mounted." No injuries have been reported.

The GSM modules in question were sold between December 2010 and October 2011. Among the integrators who use the Go!Control panel is high-volume CE Pro 100 company Vivint. It is unknown if Vivint has installed the specific GSM module in question.

Consumers are advised to "stop using the product immediately unless otherwise instructed." The notice also says, "It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product" as an advisory to integrators who might have the product in stock.

According to the notice, "The GSM radio modules used inside Go!Control panels for home security systems can overheat and combust, resulting in a fire or burn hazard to consumers."

The Chinese-made GSM radio module in the 6x8.5-inch Go!Control panel enables wireless communication between the home security system and alarm monitoring companies. The Go!Control panels are 6-inches high and 8.5-inches wide and are made of white plastic.

The CPSC is advising homeowners to contact their professional security installer to identify the module in question. 2Gig is offering a free installed replacement.

Apple iCloud Harmony ad launches

Apple has released a new commercial for its emerging cloud service and, in typical Apple fashion it features a whole bunch of videos of Apple products in different locations, showing a whole bunch of different screenshots showcasing the product in question. The ad, entitled iCloud Harmony, has no voice-over at all. That’s an interesting move considering the average consumer might need a bit of clarification on exactly what iCloud is.
The commercial features the typical Apple style of music, and among the features that are highlighted are music, photo, calendar, and contact screens from iPhones, iPads, and Macs. It also shows off apps and e-books, trying to convey the message to consumers that all this content can be automatically kept and stored in the cloud for access anywhere at any time.

The ad ends with the text “Automatic. Everywhere. iCloud.” Cloud services are likely to be one of the biggest emerging trends in 2012, with iCloud facing competition from Web-based services like Dropbox and Amazon. Another service, Box, seems to want to be the Android standard. It recently offered 50 GB of free storage space to all Android users, though the offer is only available for a limited time.

Root Galaxy Nexus CDMA Running Android 4.0.4 ICS and Install ClockworkMod Recovery

http://best-Mobile-Handset-mobile-review.blogspot.in/
Root Galaxy Nexus CDMA Running Android 4.0.4 ICS and Install ClockworkMod Recovery
The Galaxy Nexus is the first smartphone to feature full-fledged Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. As a Google Experience Device, it is also bound to be the first in line for upgrades to the Android operating system.

Thanks to the official updates that Samsung is spearheading, the Galaxy Nexus also gets the royal treatment with the latest (leaked but official) Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update.

However, in most cases, for every brand new official update that rolls out, older methods of rooting your device become obsolete. In the case of the Galaxy Nexus, updating your device to the latest Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich will eventually void your root privileges.

However, there’s a workaround to rooting the Galaxy Nexus without your having to downgrade your device. XDA Developers member adrynalyne authored a patch that enables Galaxy Nexus users to root their device running Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich.

In this tutorial, we’re going to teach you how to root your Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich.
Important Reminders

Take note that rooting your device will void your device’s warranty. Additionally, if the rooting process fails to root your device, there is a slim chance that you could damage your phone.  Please use the instructions with caution and at your own risk.  We shall not be responsible for any damage or loss because of your use of these instructions.
Requirements

Verizon Galaxy Nexus (CDMA variant) running Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich.
ADB and Fastboot installed on your computer.
Make sure that your device has at least 70% of battery left so it won’t get switched off during the installation process.
Disable antivirus software and other tools that could disrupt the installation process.

Instructions

Download the su ZIP package (su.zip) from here or here. Save the file to your computer.
Download the ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery 5.5.0.4 image for the Galaxy Nexus CDMA from here or here. Save the file to your computer.
Copy the CWM image file into the same folder where adb.exe and fastboot.exe are located on your computer.
Enable your phone’s USB debugging mode by going to “Settings > Applications > Development”. Make sure that there is a check mark beside USB Debugging.
Connect your phone to your PC via USB cable.
Copy su.zip into the root of your phone’s SD card..
Launch a command prompt (DOS prompt) on your computer and issue the following commands:
        adb reboot bootloader
        fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.5.0.4-toro.img
Using your phone’s Volume keys, select the option “Recovery Mode” and press the Power button to confirm the selection. This should boot your device to ClockworkMod Recovery.
Once inside ClockworkMod Recovery,  select “install zip from sd card”, then select “choose zip from sd card”. Browse the contents of your SD card and select the file named “su.zip” to manually flash the su binaries to your Galaxy Nexus.
Wait for the installation process to finish.
Select “++++Go Back++++”, then select “reboot system now” to reboot your phone.

To verify if you have root access or not, you can download the Superuser app in the Android Market for free.

Congratulations! You successfully rooted your Galaxy Nexus CDMA running Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. Enjoy the benefits of having a rooted device.

An Exclusive Look Inside Nokia’s Smartphone Torture Chamber

http://best-Mobile-Handset-mobile-review.blogspot.in/
An Exclusive Look Inside Nokia’s Smartphone Torture Chamber
Teijo Makinen grabs an unreleased Nokia smartphone, a product that engineers have been working on for five years to make a reality. He gives it a quick glance, then straps it to a machine and lets it free fall from about five feet onto a slab of concrete. Then he picks it up, sets it at a slightly different angle and gives it another drop.

Makinen, a hardware test specialist, has been abusing cellphones for years. It’s all part of Nokia’s effort to make sure that the devices can handle the same abuse once they are in the hands of customers.

“The purpose is to break things,” says Teemu Ala-Hynnila, director of quality operations at Nokia. That way, they can spot weaknesses and correct them before the products are released. Plus, he said, they don’t want customers to have to protect the phones with ugly rubber cases.

One room over, more prototypes are enduring other hardships. One chamber cooks phones to 55 degrees Celsius, while another sees how they do at -15 degrees Celsius. A third produces somewhere between 93 percent and 95 percent humidity.

In each case, a Nokia worker is able to pull the phone out, press a button and take a picture without delay.

The torture area is just one part of Nokia’s testing labs in Tampere, Finland. AllThingsD got a rare peek inside an area normally off-limits not only to visitors, but to most Nokia employees.

The labs themselves are a mix of old and new technology. One room resembles a 1970s sound studio. In there, enough sound is pumped in to simulate the noisiest of New York restaurants, while a robot talks into a cellphone. The robot is barely audible in the room unless you get right next to it. On the call, though, the sound is clear.

A few rooms over, a human-shaped plastic mold is filled with liquid, an effort to recreate the human form in order to test how much of a phone’s radiation is making it inside the body of a person using the phone.

Nokia is certified to do its own radiation emissions, a key step in getting new devices approved by the Federal Communications Commission and other regulators across the globe. Having its own labs, while costly, helps Nokia save the time needed to send new devices for outside testing, a move it hopes will help it crank out new devices faster.

Nokia has introduced its Pulse application

Nokia has introduced its Pulse application in November of last year, a software bit which allows users to keep in touch taking advantage of the GPS functionality inside phones. With Pulse you can check in to places and share that info with only a closed group of other users.

However, Nokia’s plans go beyond Nokia devices and those powered by Windows Phone 7. “These are social applications. To be social, you have to be on every platform”, said Basak Ozer, Nokia’s Lead for social and location applications. As such, Pulse will be coming soon to Android and iOS users too, though an exact launch date was not unveiled.

However, Nokia Pulse — which is complementary to services like Facebook and Twitter — is not the only app the Finnish company has in mind for its social and location offerings.
